Tampa Breast Augmentation RisksFor Dr. Jamie Perez’s patients in Tampa, plastic surgery is a way to enhance their appearance and give their confidence that extra boost. Breast augmentation is one of the most frequently performed surgeries at Dr. Perez’s practice. While Dr. Perez is a highly skilled surgeon with extensive experience in breast augmentation surgery, every patient should understand the potential risks that are involved with this procedure.

Breast Augmentation Risks

Any surgical procedure involves risks. At Dr. Perez’s practice in Tampa, breast augmentation will only be performed if an initial consultation shows you to be a good candidate for breast augmentation surgery. This, along with Dr. Perez’s experience, helps our Tampa patients minimize breast augmentation risks and complications following surgery. However, it is important to be aware of the possible risks that can result from breast augmentation surgery. These complications and risks include:

    • Infection: Some patients may experience a delayed recovery time if the incision does not heal properly. If this happens, you may be more vulnerable to bacteria entering the wound and causing infection.
    • Asymmetry: The breast may appear to be uneven in size, shape, or placement on the chest wall.
    • Rupture or leak: Implants can rupture or leak if a hole or tear is present in the implant. This may be due to a traumatic injury or the disintegration of the implant over time.
    • Capsular contracture: If your body reacts negatively to the breast implant, scar tissue can harden around the implant and leave you with pain and an unnatural hardness in your breast.
    • Rippling: In some cases the breast implant may be felt or seen through the skin and can show wrinkling or other abnormalities.
    • Sensitivity changes: Some women may experience either increased or decreased sensitivity in the breasts and nipples.
    • Seroma: This is a condition in which fluid collects around the implant. This can cause swelling, bruising, or pain.
    • Hematoma: Similar to seroma, this condition is the result of blood collecting around the implant. This condition also causes bruising and swelling.
    • Rash: Some patients may experience an uncomfortable rash on the breast and surrounding skin.
    • Calcium deposits: Sometimes hard lumps of calcium get deposited under the skin surrounding a breast implant. These will feel similar to a cancerous lump and will need to be examined by a doctor to rule out the need for further treatment.

The good news is that these complications only occur in rare instances. In addition, these complications can be corrected. If you experience any of the above symptoms or are dissatisfied with the results of your breast augmentation surgery for any reason, see Dr. Perez. Dr. Perez can recommend an appropriate solution for correcting any of these conditions.
