Extra High Profile Implants for Breast Augmentation

The three companies approved by the FDA have designed an extra-high profile silicone breast that is a true gummy bear. Those implants are excellent for women who have loose breast tissue especially after having children and/or those with a high risk of rippling. These implants are known to increase the projection of the breast and the upper pole fullness; this is a very desirable outcome that most women search for nowadays.

If you are considering having a breast augmentation, then you have heard by now about the different types of incisions used in this procedure. For the past few years one of the most common ones has been the transaxillary incision, which creates an almost invisible cut in your armpit, about 1 inch long, in order to insert the implants in your breasts.

Normally, this particular incision requires the use of an endoscope, which is a very thin and long tube with a camera in its tip that helps guide the surgeon in the creation of the pocket and the positioning of the implants. The use of this instrument makes the procedure very efficient, allowing an easy way in and avoiding any visible cuts on the breast tissue.

It’s important to highlight that a transaxillary incision does not cause any more pain in patients than any other incision used in breast augmentation procedures. Most of the pain experienced after the surgery stems from the placement of the implants underneath the muscle, and this is something that can be easily managed with pain medication and lasts on average no more than a couple of days.

Also, the risk of infection is very low and no higher than with other incisions. Taking care of your armpits after surgery is important in order to avoid complications, and luckily it’s very easy to do. Just make sure to wash both armpits once a day and wait at least 2 full days to start shaving and using deodorant again. If you follow these steps, the incisions will eventually become almost invisible and blend in with the skin in your armpits. See sample pictures here.

Keep in mind that not all plastic surgeons are capable of performing this procedure via a transaxillary incision and you should find someone who is experienced and is able to explain all the options available to you. This is a skill that demands a high degree of competence and special training. Also, the implants can be introduced via a cut made around the edge of the areola, but this approach may lead to loss of sensation around the nipple and issues in breastfeeding, which is why Dr. Perez does not perform this approach.

Dr. Jaime Perez specializes in Transaxillary Breast Augmentations and is available to answer any questions you may have about this procedure. Contact us at the Plastic Surgery Center of Tampa to schedule a consultation.
