A woman outdoors smilingDr. Jamie Perez has helped many patients in and around Tampa look their very best and their very youngest. One of the ways that this is done is through eyelid surgery. Also known as an eyelift and blepharoplasty, eyelid surgery can leave you looking years younger and fully rejuvenated.

We’d like to take a moment to consider the side effects associated with cosmetic eyelid surgery so that you have realistic expectations about the treatment process and what it has in store for you.

Are side effects common after cosmetic eyelid surgery?

Side effects are natural after undergoing any kind of surgical procedure. In essence, side effects are just your body’s response to the natural healing process. Side effects are much different from complications, the latter of which are serious medical issues that are not a normal part of the healing and recovery process.

Complications can be prevented and the duration and severity of side effects diminished by following your instructions for post-operative care to the letter. These will ensure ideal conditions for healing and recovery.

Pain and Discomfort

Pain and discomfort are to be expected after any sort of surgery given the incisions made and the revisions to the tissues of the treatment area. The pain and discomfort following cosmetic eyelid surgery will last for a few days and will diminish gradually as patients continue to heal. Prescription pain relievers can be used to help address serious issues with pain and discomfort.

Bruising and Swelling

Bruising and swelling are also both common after you undergo a cosmetic eyelid surgery. As with the pain and discomfort, both bruising and swelling tend to be most pronounced in the first few days after surgery. By the end of the first week, bruising should fade and significant swelling will have abated. Swelling can last for a few weeks, so be sure to keep that in mind.

Irritated or Itchy Eyes

It should come as no surprise that the eyes and eyelids may feel itchy or irritated after the procedure. Dryness of the eyelids can be dealt with by using special medicated ointments for the eyelids. Patients are advised to avoid rubbing, touching, or scratching their eyes until they have fully healed.

Blurry Vision

A person’s vision will often become blurry or hazy after they undergo eyelid surgery. This is associated with the eye irritation that is common following surgery. These matters will generally subside after a few days.

Dry Eye and Excessive Tearing

Sometimes patients will notice problems with dry eye or excessive tear production as they heal from cosmetic eyelid surgery. This is often part of the irritation issue. While little can be done about the issue of excessive tearing, patients are told to treat dry eye attacks using liquid tears.

Post-Surgical Scarring

Scarring is to be expected after undergoing any kind of surgery. With that in mind, surgeons always make efforts to ensure that the scarring is as well concealed as possible. First of all, the incisions are very small. Second, they are carefully hidden. For upper eyelid surgery, the incisions are hidden in the natural fold that occurs on the eyelid; for lower eyelid surgery, incisions are hidden below the lower eyelashes.

Keep Your Surgeon Posted as You Recover

If you should face any undue pain or discomfort as you heal from cosmetic eyelid surgery, be sure speak with your cosmetic surgeon as soon as possible. This will allow problems to be treated as soon as they arise and for any potential complications to be avoided.
